Bellevue High School is a Public Secondary School located in Bellevue, Washington , USA. In the 2005-2006 school year, Bellevue had 1492 students enrolled in grades 9 through 12. The School Principal is Mike Bacigalupi, and the Assistant Principals are Doug Sovde and Johnnie Gregory. Their Mascot is the Wolverine . Bellevue High School generally serves students in Bellevue School District 's West Zone, which includes the towns of Medina , Yarrow Point , Clyde Hill , Hunts Point and Beaux Arts , and the neighborhoods of Enatai, Woodridge, Wilburton and Downtown Bellevue. However due to Bellevue School District's open enrollment policy, students from all over the district, and even outside of the district attend Bellevue High as well. ACADEMICS The school has recently won national recognition for its excellence in academics, ranking among the top 50 schools in the nation for the number of AP tests taken divided by the number of seniors by Newsweek Magazine for the past few years. All regular high schools in the Bellevue School District are on the list. It has also been ranked the best public high school (#1) in the nation by Newsweek Magazine based on the number of AP tests taken divided by the number of seniors. However, Bellevue High School has reached its building population limit and has closed its open enrollment policy for the 2006-2007 school year. Only students living within its zones may newly enroll. ATHLETICS Bellevue's 20 varsity teams and 45 other teams provide a full range of team and individual sports. Bellevue High is also known for defeating Concord, California's De La Salle High School football team on September 4 , 2004 , ending the longest winning streak in American high school football history. On September 16 , 2005 , Bellevue defeated another California powerhouse, Long Beach Poly High (of Long Beach, California ) at Qwest Field in Seattle . The Bellevue High Football team had won the 3A Washington State Football Championships for four straight years, before succumbing in 2005 in the Quarterfinal round to Prosser. Bellevue High's Girls Swim Team has also accomplished four consecutive state wins. ACTIVITIES After school activities include ASB, Debate , Drama , DECA , Junior Statesmen, National Honor Society , Earth Save, FIRST Robotics , Gay-Straight Alliance, Key Club, Math Club, and club sports. Bellevue's Speech & Debate team has experienced a huge resurgence in the past three years, and is now considered one of the top teams in Washington state. Its Varsity LD (Lincoln Douglas) debate squad has won the University of Puget Sound tournament, qualified and cleared at NFL Nationals, qualified to state (receiving a current total of 4 state bids, the most per capita of any squad in Washington), received a TOC bid, and attended several Round Robins. It currently has two debaters ranked in the top 200 in the country and top 5 in the state. It is coached by Susanna Cerasuolo, Kai Zhao (varsity coach), and Peter Van Elswyk (varsity coach). DEMOGRAPHICS In the 2005-2006 school year, the total student population was 1492. The racial demographics are: 3% African American, 25% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% Hispanic, 4% Multiracial and 65% White. 21% of students have anoher first language besides English, and 11% qualify for free or reduced lunches. MUSIC Music groups include Bellairs, Beginning Intermediate and Advanced Choir , Concert Band , Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band I and II, Orchestra , and Pep Band.
