Bell Curve Grading

In Education , grading on a Bell Curve is grading a group of examinations first using a numerical point system, then assigning the highest grade an 'A' (assuming the ABCDF grading scale), regardless of its numerical grade (which can be failing). The average grade is assigned a 'C' and the lowest fail (even if the numerical grade is passing).

The curve can be computed in one of two ways:

  • Find the difference in points between the highest grade and a perfect score and add that number to every exam (this method helps insure against an unfairly difficult examination). This method is often called simply "grading on a curve" or "curved grades", since the original distribution of grades may not fit a normal distribution.

  • Find the statistical average grade and assign it a 'C'. The highest and lowest grades receive an 'A' and 'F' respectively and the other grades are scaled between these three reference points assigned an alphabetic grade base on their deviation from the statistical average (which can use Mean , Median , Mode ).
