The Battle for Caen was a battle between allied and German troops in the Second World War . It took part between June and August 1944 . Originally the allied planners wanted to conquer the French town Caen, one of the biggest cities of the Normandy, and the area around it as part of Operation Neptune . But the allied troops were unable to seize the area and the town on D-Day, like the planners had wanted. Bernard Montgomery started several Operations afterwards to seize the area. On the other hand the Allies wanted the German commanders to think, the main attack would take place in the British zone, so that the Germans give their best to push the Britain’s back, while the Americans would be able to pursuit towards the centre of France. On the 9th and 10th July British and Canadian troops seized the northern and western part of Caen. Another nine days later - on the 19th July - they conquered the whole town. Afterwards the Allied tried to pursuit on the Caen-Falaise line. The following fighting is known as the Falaise Gap . Allied operations in and around Caen include:
The Battle for Caen suffered many losses, but afterwards the Americans were able to push back the Germans out of the Normandy. The medieval town Caen, as also the villages, towns and the area near it were almost destroyed by the allied bombardments and artillery fire. The rebuild-phase of Caen took place from 1948 until 1962 . The Battle for Caen was recreated in several movies and in the video game Call Of Duty 2 . WEBLINKS
