PLOT SUMMARY

The story starts with a young Bruce Wayne falling down a hole on the grounds of Wayne Manor. Bats begin to swarm towards him and out the hole. Bruce's father, Dr. Thomas Wayne, rescues him but is angry at Bruce's carelessness. Bruce's mother comforts him when he asks if he was in Hell . She reassures him it was just an old cave. The story cuts to scenes of the murder of Bruce's parents and him kneeling at their dead bodies.

Scenes of Bruce's travels are shown including his entrance in the FBI. The next scene depicts Bruce wandering a snowy mountainous region in Asia when he comes to a monastery. He receives no answer from the residents and waits in the entrance for three weeks. Finally he is met by Master Kirgi, but is not given training. For five months he does household chores such as sweep, clean, and cook until he is given the instruction. Nearly a year after his arrival, Master Kirgi tells Bruce he has exceptional intelligence and physique. He tells Bruce this is terrible because he cannot value what comes easily. Master Kirgi tells Bruce a violence has marked him that has made him a genius and requests Bruce to stay for 20 years. Bruce tells him he does not have the time and leaves that night.

He heads to France next and trains with a hitman named Henri Ducard . Ducard showed Bruce skills such as deception and cunning. When Ducard killed a fugitive he had been tracking, Bruce became disgusted with his ways and left.

Bruce meets and learns from every great detective in the world (not shown in the story) except one, Willie Doggett. Bruce and Doggett were tracking down a man named Tom Woodley to a mountain ledge. Woodley killed Doggett. Bruce outsmarted Woodley and pushed him off the mountain. Bruce, without food or warmth, wandered the snowy mountains. After falling unconscious, he is rescued by an Indian Chief. When Bruce awakens, the Chief tells Bruce he has the mark of the bat, an animal sacred in his tribe.

Bruce leaves and returns to Gotham to begin his crime-fighting. His first night is deemed a failure. While in the library of Wayne Manor that night, a bat crashes through the window. Bruce is frightened, but turns content at the occurrence. He creates his new costumed identity which he names The Batman.
