Bangladesh Railway is the state-owned Railway company of Bangladesh . It came into being following the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 . It is a descendent of the East Pakistan Railway which itself was spun off from the Assam-Bengal Railway. HEADQUARTERS Bangladesh Railway headquarter is located in the southern port city of Chittagong , which had historically been the south-eastern terminus of the Assam-Bengal Railway. RAILROADS As of 2005 , Bangladesh Railway has a total of 2,706.1 kilometres of railroads . Out of that, 923 km are broad gauge (1.676 meter) tracks (mostly in the western region), while the remaining 1,822 km are meter gauge tracks (mostly in the central and eastern regions).
