DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 6,594 people, 2,348 households, and 1,777 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 3/km&2 (8/mi&2). There were 2,738 housing units at an average density of 1/km&2 (3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 66.68% White , 1.27% Black or African American , 0.65% Native American , 0.14% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 28.60% from Other Races , and 2.65% from two or more races. 47.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,348 households out of which 37.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.90% were Married Couples living together, 7.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.30% were non-families. 22.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.28. In the county, the population was spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.10 males.
