The first awards began in the 1920s , before the Nazis had come to power in Germany , with the political decorations worn on early Party uniforms. Most early Nazis also displayed a variety of awards from the time of the First World War . After 1933 , the state began issuing a variety of civilian decorations which could be bestowed upon any citizen of the Reich. Thus, some awards (such as Sports Badges) were bestowed on Nazi Party members, members of the German military, and regular civilians. Third Reich military awards, by far the most commonly recognized, began to be bestowed in 1939 after the start of World War II . Regulations of award issuance also permitted the simultaneous wear of military, civilian, and political decorations on any military or Para-military uniform of the Third Reich, allow for a wide variety of combinations in manner of wear and awards displayed. PRE-NAZI AWARDS The following pre-1933 decorations, however, were displayed and worn by a large number of Nazi Party and Wehrmacht personnel. This was due to regulations which permitted the continued wear of certain awards from the pre-Nazi Weimar Republic , as well as the display of any combat awards earned during World War I . Of the countless medals and decorations issued in Germany before 1933, the following were the most common to be found displayed during the Nazi era.
UNBESTOWED AWARDS The following awards of Nazi Germany were either under design, projected for design, or had been approved for issuance but never bestowed when the Second World War ended in 1945.
