Austrian Legislative Election, 1971

The elections to the Austria n National Council of 1971 , held only one year after the 1970 Elections , were the first after a reform of election law that increased the number of seats in parliament from 165 to 183. Bruno Kreisky , leader of the SPÖ had already led a Minority Cabinet since 1970 , which had been tolerated by the FPÖ . The electoral reform, which was favorable to small parties, was one of the concessions he had to make.

The outcome of the election was an absolute majority for Kreisky which held until 1983 .
