The elections to the Austria n National Council of 1970 were the first where a plurality was won by the SPÖ , now led by Bruno Kreisky . The previous ÖVP government headed by Josef Klaus was replaced by a Minority Cabinet which was tolerated by the FPÖ (led by Friedrich Peter ). Klaus might have been able to carry on as Chancellor by entering into a coalition with the FPÖ, but he immediately resigned after the (rather unexpected) defeat. Kreisky remained Chancellor Of Austria until 1983 after gaining an absolute majority in 1971 , 1975 and 1979 . | ||
