It has been signposted for part of its length in a tri-state agreement. Some areas require good skills in navigation by the hiker. The Australian Alps Walking Track is an extension of the old Victorian Alps Walking Track, made in the 1970's. The Victorian track was extended after many years of promotion by the Federation of Victorian Walking and various government departments. Between Walhalla and Tharwa it passes through these National Parks:
