Australian Airlines is a Low-cost Airline based in Australia , servicing Australian and Asian destinations. It is an all economy, full service international leisure carrier and is wholly owned subsidiary of Qantas Airways , although run independently of the mainline carrier. Its main base is Cairns International Airport (CNS), with a secondary hub at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). HISTORY The airline was established in 2001 and started operations on 27 October 2002 , reusing the name Qantas gained when it merged with former Australian domestic carrier Australian Airlines in 1993 . Its initial network of flights concentrated on leisure tourism between Queensland and Japan . Subsequent expansion brought on other leisure destinations throughout Southeast Asia .In 2005 Australian Airlines managed to earn a SKYTRAX "4 Star Airline" rating, despite its "low cost airline tag". However, by 2006, rising fuel costs and dropping passenger numbers caught up with the airline. On April 11th, 2006, Geoff Dixon, CEO of the QANTAS group, announced that Australian Airlines would cease operating its own liveried aircraft by July 2006, with the aircraft being painted back into the QANTAS livery. Australian Airlines will continue to operate and crew QANTAS aircraft on QANTAS routes under a "wet lease" agreement. SERVICES Australian Airlines operated scheduled services to the following destinations (at January 2005 ):

FLEET The Australian Airlines fleet consists of 5 Boeing 767-338ER (at April 2006 ). 2005 NEWS International leisure carrier Australian Airlines unveiled a new uniform for its 310 flight attendants. Australian Airlines Chief Executive, Andrea Staines, said the design brief was to update the uniform so that it reflected the airline’s position as an established full-service carrier in the Asia-Pacific region. The result is a uniform that is contemporary, relaxed and distinctively Australian to reflect the spirit of the international holiday airline and our flight attendants. The most distinctive feature of the new uniform is the white shirt with ochre dots in a wave pattern in keeping with the unique design of our aircraft livery. They are moving from a desert sand coloured bomber jacket to a smart casual black jacket and trouser suit featuring our unique logo, she said. The uniforms are comfortable to wear in all of the cities and countries we fly to, look stylish and suit the role of our crew. 2006 NEWS Due to small profit margins, Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon announced all operations of Australian Airlines will cease at the end of April. The Australia Airlines fleet will be repainted with the traditional Qantas logo, and resume flying as part of the Qantas fleet. However, eventually the planes will be handed over to Jetstar, who will then take over a few of the previous Australian Airline routes. EXTERNAL LINKS |
