Australia is a Board Game intended for two to five people. It is authored by W. Kramer and M. Kiesling, and is published by Ravensburger. It is recommended for ages 10-99. Australia has won the Games Magazine Game of the Year award. THE STORY You are in Australia in the 1920's. The government wants you to modernize their industries, but at the same time, they want you to develop several national parks, and other conservation projects. Doing so makes you earn points. THE RULES The Game Board The game board consists of 24 land and water regions. All regions are surrounded by a number of camps, or ships in the case of water regions. Around the edge of the board is a number track, used to count points. The pieces Every player receives an aeroplane, a score marker, and a number of rangers, depending on the number of people playing. The aeroplane is used to fly rangers, the rangers are used to score points, and the score counter is used to keep track of points. Cards and tiles Every region receives two tiles, one conservation and one industialization. When a conservation project is completed, the tile is removed. The same goes for industrialization tiles. More on that later. Cards are used to place rangers in regions, and to earn "Dollars," the game's form of money. Players may chose between placing 4 rangers, placing 3 rangers and earning one dollar, 2 and 2, and 1 and 3. However, cards may only be played when an airplane is in the region with the color on the card. Turns Every turn, one may take 2 actions. The actions are as follows. Fly your airplane Move your aeroplane to a different region. Play a card Play a card of your region's color, receive the number of dollars indicated, and place rangers at any one camp along the perimeter. Take back rangers Remove up to four rangers from any number of camps next to your airplane. Scoring Conservation projects If at any point, a region is surrounded with rangers, the person whom played the last ranger in the region receives three points. Also, everyone earns one point for each ranger surrounding the region ( two if they are on ships.) Industrialization projects Upon landing in a region, one flips over that region's "Industrialization tile." If at any point that region is surrounded by exactly that many rangers, then a scoring occurs, just like with conservation projects. Spending dollars Changing colors of cards For 3 dollars, one can change the color of a card. Moving Rangers For four dollars, one can move one ranger. Points At the end of the game, 1 dollar= 1 point End of game The game ends when you run out of cards. The person with the most points wins. |
