  • Most of these towns are named from Oliver Goldsmith 's popular 18th century poem, "The Deserted Village", which begins:

  • :Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain,

:Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain
:Where smiling spring its earliest visit paid,
:And parting summer's lingering blooms delayed

The poem was about the village Athlone , Ireland , Goldsmith's childhood home. He lived in Lissoy Parsonage, which was also called Auburn.

  • Auburn University gets its name from the town in which it is located, Auburn, Alabama . It gets its nickname "Tigers" from line 355: "Where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey". AU is also called "the loveliest village on the plain", as referenced in the first line of the poem.


  • The Auburn Automobile Company, an American automobile marque that existed from 1900 to 1937.
