Atlantic City International Airport , formerly known as '''Pomona Field''', is a public Airport located 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Atlantic City , New Jersey in Egg Harbor Township near the Atlantic City Expressway . The facility is owned and operated by the South Jersey Transportation Authority and serves as a base for the New Jersey Air National Guard and major research and testing hub for the Federal Aviation Administration . The airport is served by two commercial airlines, Spirit Airlines and Delta Connection carrier, Comair , neither of which currently serve any international destinations nonstop, but both offer extensive coverage nationally and internationally with as little as one stop. In the past ACY has also been served by US Airways Express and Continental Express on turboprops and rejional jets, most notably being service to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport by Continental Express carrier ExpressJet Airlines on Embraer ERJ regional Jets. Delta Air Lines also offered service to Boston on Delta Connection regional jets operated by Atlantic Coast Airlines , now Independence Air until a few years ago. Due to the airport's current growth, more airlines could begin service quite soon, especially from low-fare carriers like JetBlue Airways , AirTran Airways , Allegiant Air or low-fare leader Southwest Airlines . The South Jersey Transportation Authority has outlined plans for massive terminal expansions (on top of current initiatives) which might be necessary if more air carriers wish to serve the airport.

FACILITIES

Atlantic City International Airport covers 5,000 acres and has two runways:
  • Runway 4/22: 6,144 x 150 ft. (1,873 x 46 m), Surface: Asphalt/Concrete

  • Runway 13/31: 10,000 x 150 ft. (3,048 x 46 m), Surface: Asphalt

Total passenger traffic at the airport in 2004 was 1,050,172, the second consecutive year that volume topped one million. The airport is currently undergoing a 40 Million Dollar terminal and taxiway expansion project which will more than double the size of current facilities. Atlantic City International Airport has been winning praise by South Jersey residents and those visiting the area as a pleasant alternative to Philadelphia International Airport and the New York City area airports, fueling its impressive growth.
