Information About

Asian Australians

"Asian Australian", like other categorical definitions of ethnicity in Australia (Southern European - Australians , Indigenous Australians ) cannot be defined simply as a similar group of people sharing a fixed cultural background. For example, India n Australians, Filipino-Australian s, and Chinese Australian s are very different from each other in both culture and, often, physical sppearance. Like the term " Hispanic American", saying that a person is "Asian" is not specifically referring to a certain lifetyle or culture and could refer to a wide range of different Asian ethnic sub-groups. Unlike the term "Hispanic American", though, "Asian Australian" designates a geographical origin rather than a cultural or linguistic one.

Additionally, although the term "Asian" in Australia is most popularly used as a term to group peoples with physical characteristics resembling East Asia n people, Asians from the Indian Subcontinent , Southeast Asia (including Vietnam , Cambodia , the Philippines , Indonesia , and Insular Malaysia ) and the Islam ic Middle East are also included in the Asian Australian grouping for cultural studies and academic works, as well as for official government and census purposes.

Asian Australians were 7.96% of the Australian population in 2001.
