Information About

Ashokan Farewell

Although it is a modern piece, viewers of the ''The Civil War'' frequently, and erroneously, believe it was written and performed during the Civil War. In fact, it is the only modern composition in the soundtrack; all other music is authentic 19th century music.

The piece is named for the Ashokan Field Campus of the State University Of New York At New Paltz , where Ungar and his wife Molly Mason hold their Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps for adults and families each year. (Ashokan was also once a village, now mostly covered by the pristine Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskill Mountains .)
