Arthur was groomed through Manchester United 's youth system and made his debut in a League Cup Third Round match against local rivals Manchester City in 1974 . He was a reliable, strong Full Back , a Denis Irwin of his day. He helped the club win the FA Cup in 1977 , 1983 , and 1985 . Arthur left Manchester United in 1988 for West Bromwich Albion to link up with ex-Red Devils boss Ron Atkinson on a free transfer. After a single season at The Hawthorns he moved on to Dundee , and went on to play for Chesterfield , Chester City and Molde in Norway . In his career, he made 464 appearances and scored 7 goals.

Albiston also made 14 appearances for Scotland , making his debut on October 14 , 1981 against Northern Ireland . His total includes 1 game at the World Cup Finals , a 0-0 draw against Uruguay on June 13 , 1986 in Group E of the Mexico tournament.
