OVERVIEW Arnhem International School secondary department offers an English language academic programme beginning with elements of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which builds up to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. The IB Diploma Programme is offered to students who have successfully completed the IGCSE examinations or similar examinations elsewhere. The curriculum allows for differentiation and although a working knowledge of English is required for all subjects, support lessons in English and Dutch are offered when possible. A wide range of enrichment activities in discrete subjects and in special assignments, together with a variety of extracurricular activities and special projects, form an integral part of the school programme. Fieldwork, European-wide visits, the Model United Nations , workshops, sports and theatre visits are embedded in the system. The school in particularly aware of the importance of internationalism and aims to promote this by including Language and Cultural Awareness as part of the curriculum. It is currently the only school in the Netherlands invited to the Student's League of Nations in Geneva , Switzerland . Arnhem International School has a Primary ( Aletta Jacobs ' School) and a Secondary department. Around forty-five nationalities are represented in a school population of 200-250 pupils. Those pupils come largely from expat families who live and work in the Arnhem region. Although located in the Netherlands, Arnhem International School as well as other IBO schools in the Netherlands is only open to: children of non-Dutch families residing in the Netherlands for a limited period, and children of Dutch families who have been educated abroad and Dutch families intending to relocate internationally. The school maintains an active Student Council and an active IPC (International Parents' Committee). The Arnhem International School values close contact with parents. The International Parents' Committee helps organize various activities and takes part in discussions on curricular development. An active Students' Council enriches the school's climate through discussion and action. Arnhem International School is the only International School in the province of Gelderland, and thus serves students living in Nijmegen , Ede , Zutphen , Apeldoorn and other cities in the province. The international character of the Arnhem International School is further reflected in its faculty of native speakers of and teachers from countries within and outside the EU . They have an excellent command of English, a thorough knowledge of the programmes and a deep understanding of the needs of internationally mobile children, ensuring high academic standards and intensive pastoral care and counselling. PRIMARY DEPARTMENT The primary department provides a safe and friendly environment for children in which they can reach their full academic and social potential while benefiting from the rich multi-cultural atmosphere within the school. Small class sizes enable staff to build up a close relationship with pupils and identify specific individual needs. Pupils have regular access to the multi-media centre, which is used for both individual learning and group project work. It is well-equipped with books in English and Dutch, computer and audio equipment and there is Internet access. SECONDARY DEPARTMENT The majority of lessons in the secondary department are offered in the international wing, where classrooms, the Learning Resources Centre, the Head's office, the Coordinator's and Careers Counsellor 's offices are situated around a study hall. The department also has access to the facilities of the Dutch school. The unique combination of an international school, with over thirty nationalities represented, within a Dutch school offers students the best of both worlds. IB region: Africa / Europe / Middle East Arnhem International School has been an IB World School since July 1989 . It offers the IB Middle Years Programme and IB Diploma Programme. The school is state funded. IB Middle Years Programme Authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Programme since July 2005 , the programme is taught in English. The school is open to male and female students. The current head of the school is Maarten van der Louw. The current Middle Years coordinator is Rubin Borges.
