''Arctic Fox'' was developed by ''. The design team at Dynamix behind this game would eventually go on to produce '' The Incredible Machine '', and '' The Red Baron ''.

It is fair to say that the entire ''Stellar 7'' series was greatly influenced by Atari 's '' Battlezone '' which was released in arcades in 1983 , and is considered by some to be the first game in the First-person Shooters genre. Much like ''Battlezone'', the Apple IIe version of ''Arctic Fox'' used line polygons in order to appear 3-dimensional.

The plot revolves around an alien takeover of Antarctica , with the aliens attempting to steal Earth 's Oxygen . The player is thrust into battle behind the wheel of a futuristic tank - Code Name: Arctic Fox, and has to pilot it over a series of levels in an attempt to destroy the aliens' ships and equipment. Time is running short, as the aliens are converting Earth's atmosphere in preparation for a colony there. The player's goal is to knock out the main alien communication array, aided by the tank's abilities to jump, burrow into the snow, and fire oxygen-based mortars at their weather equipment.

While the graphics may look a bit primitive now (clunking along at about 3 Frames-per-second , this was truly a revolutionary game at the time, at the forefront of polygon-based 3-D graphics, and a showcase for the Amiga's emerging power.

It is unclear whether ''Arctic Fox'' is related to '' Skyfox '', which had been published by Electronic Arts earlier in 1984 . ''Arctic Fox'' and ''Skyfox'' shared similar game mechanics in that they were both first-person vehicle simulators where the object was to destroy all enemies on a landscape in order to clear each level.

''Skyfox'' and ''Arctic Fox'' differed however in that ''Skyfox'' was set in a plane which could enter airspace to fight enemy planes.
