1842 – The French government enacts the ''Loi relative à l'établissement des grandes lignes de chemins de fer'' which establishes the plan for French railroads' placement in a star pattern centered around Paris .
1857 – The Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway company (PLM) is formed from the amalgamation of the Chemin de fer de Lyon à la Méditerranée (LM) and the Chemin de fer de Paris à Lyon (PL) companies.
