Animal Legal Defense Fund




The Animal Legal Defense Fund ('''ALDF''') is a legal Animal-welfare organization focused on protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system. Founded in 1979 by attorney Joyce Tischler, it is a Non-profit Organization with more than 100,000 members and supporters. Some of the organization's stated strategies for finding legal remedies to stop Cruelty To Animals include:

  • Filing lawsuits to stop animal abuse and expand the boundaries of animal law.

  • Providing Free Legal Assistance to Prosecutor s handling cruelty cases.

  • Working to strengthen state anti-cruelty statutes.

  • Encouraging the Federal Government to enforce existing animal protection laws.

  • Promoting the field of Animal Law through Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapters and the Animal Law Program.

  • Providing public education through seminars, workshops and other outreach efforts.


In addition to its national headquarters in the Cotati, California , the ALDF maintains offices in Omaha, Nebraska and Portland, Oregon .
