Information About

Andy Bean

Andy Bean (born March 13 , 1953 in LaFayette, Georgia ) ia an American Professional Golfer who has won numerous tournaments at both the amateur and professional level including 11 PGA Tour victories.

Bean was raised in Jekyll Island, Georgia , where his father was associated with a golf course. His family moved to Lakeland, Florida when he was 15, and his father bought a golf course there. Bean attended the University Of Florida in Gainesville, Florida , and while there won four amateur tournaments. He turned pro in 1975.

Bean was a dominant player on the PGA Tour from 1977 - 1986 . He did not finish outside the top 35 on the money list during those years, a stetch that included 5 top-seven finishes. His first PGA Tour victory was at the Doral-Eastern Open in 1977, and his last was at the Byron Nelson Golf Classic in 1986. His best year on the tour was 1978 , when he won three times.

Bean's biggest career disappointment is that he never won a Major Championship . He came closest in the 1978 U.S. Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado . A par at 18 would have assured him no worse than a playoff; however, he lost to fellow University of Florida alum, Andy North .

Since turning 50 in March 2003 , Bean has been enjoying the resurgence of his game on the Champions Tour , where his best finish is a tie for 2nd at the Commerce Bank Long Island Classic. Bean also holds the record for the longest drive on the Champions Tour at 367 yards. {Link without Title} URL last accessed April 21, 2006

Bean still lives in Lakeland in Florida where he enjoys hunting and fishing. He and his wife Debbie, have 3 daughters, Lauren (born 1982), Lindsey (born 1984) and Jordan (born 1985).
