The majority of current Irish people believe themselves to be descended from Gaelic peoples living in Ireland prior to the Viking and Norman settlements. However, such peoples and dynasties who claimed Gaelic descent in Ireland were in a minority compared to others who claimed entirely different ethnic origins.
