Ana Montes

Montes was born in West Germany , where her father, Alberto Montes, was posted as an Army psychologist. The family later lived in Topeka and Baltimore . Montes had a good education, and studied at the University Of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University . Alberto Montes, a Puerto Rican , had strong Conservative views, and had a strained relationship with his more radical children.

After working for a time at the Department Of Justice , Montes joined the Defense Intelligence Agency as a junior analyst in 1985 . She was already working for the Cuban government at this point. As a DIA analyst, her specific focus was Nicaragua . There is considerable speculation as to why Montes agreed to work for the Cubans — suggestions include ideological sympathies, blackmail, or a romantic attachment. Montes was not paid for her spying, and says that she did it out of a sense of moral obligation.

At the Defense Intelligence Agency, Montes advanced through the ranks. Her co-workers regarded her as responsible and dependable, and noted her "no-nonsense" attitude. She eventually became the Agency's senior analyst for matters regarding Cuba. In her career, Montes passed a considerable amount of classified information to Cuba's government, including the identities of four spies.

Montes was arrested by the FBI at her office on 20 September 2001 . It is not clear how her activities were discovered. In 2002 , she pleaded guilty to the charge which could have carried the death penalty, but was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
