Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf operates the Amsterdam Metro system. The eastern line to Amsterdam Zuidoost , including Bijlmermeer , consists of two branches, line 53 and 54. Line 51, partially sharing track with lines 53 and 54, is a light rail rather than a 'real' metro line, to Amstelveen . Ring line 50 provides a fast connection between the west and the southeast, widely around the city centre. The Amsterdam metro supplements a system of trams (streetcars). The tracks are compatible, and between Zuid/WTC and Westwijk they are shared by metro 51 and tram 5. The stations are adapted for this by dual height platforms. HISTORY AND FUTURE Amsterdam decided on the construction of a metro system in 1968. Four lines were supposed to be built that would interconnect the whole city. In 1970 the construction of the eastern line was started, which started operating in 1977. This eastern line consists out of two branches, line 53 and 54. In 1990 line 51 was opened, partially sharing track with the previous lines. It was extended as a light rail rather than a 'real' metro line to Amstelveen . In 1997 the ring line (50) was added to the system, providing a fast connection between the south and the west, as people do not have to travel through the city centre anymore. In 2003 , the construction of the North/South Line started, which is to be completed in july 2012 . The new metro line will be the first to go to the northern Amsterdam discrict, across the IJ Bay . From there on, it will run, via Central Station, to Zuid/WTC, which is supposed to become the new transport hub. This line might be extended to Schiphol Airport in the future. The Amsterdam metro supplements an older system of many trams (streetcars). The tracks are compatible, and between Zuid/WTC and Westwijk they are shared by metro 51 and tram 5.
