Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand




The first New Zealand Amnesty group was founded in 1965 , and the organisation was incorporated in 1966 . Since being founded, the organisation has worked to free Prisoners Of Conscience , fight human rights violations around the world, and promote human rights in New Zealand by lobbying and education.

The AINZ acts primarily with a focus on rights within the Asia-Pacific region, and is secretariat for the Association Of Commonwealth Amnesty International Sections .

Among the high profile campaigns the organisation has taken part in was the case of Algerian an elected Member Of Parliament and Asylum Seeker Ahmed Zaoui . He was detained without trial for two years, 10 months of which were in Solitary Confinement . In December 2004 New Zealand's new Supreme Court ordered Mr Zaoui released under the bail of Auckland 's Dominican Friars.
