Information About

Alternative Nation

THE MAGAZINE

This is given over primarily to reviews of alternative music. Genres covered include: Rock , Goth / Industrial , Nu Metal , Punk , Rap/Hip-Hop , and Metal . The catch-all 'Alternative' is used for music which falls within the remit of the site but which is not easily categorised. The magazine also carries reviews of movies and videogames, plus occasional fiction pieces and opinion articles.

Additionally, the magazine presents news articles on various topics, ranging from band news (including tour dates and new releases) to political scandal. Periodically the site will feature more in-depth articles such as interviews.

THE FORUM

The forum started as a means to provide an online community for visitors of the Glasgow Cathouse, and was then known as the Cathouse Forum. This later expanded to encompass the Glasgow alternative scene as a whole, and underwent a change of name, becoming the Inyourcity forum. A further change saw the site become Alternative Nation as it currently stands. The forum to date has more than 1,600,000 posts and over 10,000 members (though this does include inactive members). It runs on heavily-modified VBulletin code, and is not run for profit.

SUB-FORUMS

There are several hundred of these, including forums outwith the site's direct control which are hosted for local bands. The most popular include:

  • General Chat - Fairly self-explanatory.

  • Lifestyle - For discussions of alternative lifestyles. Further sub-divided into Fashion, Food and Drink, Debate and Politics, and many more.

  • Entertainment - Includes sub-forums for Movies, TV and Literature & Books, amongst others.

  • Computers - Covers gaming, digital artwork, Web design and technical support.

  • Alternative Communities and Venues - For discussions of clubbing and club venues throughout the UK and beyond.
