An alternative currency is any currency designed to function independently from national or multinational currency systems (usually referred to as national or Fiat Money ). When used in combination with or when designed to work in combination with national or multinational fiat currencies they are referred to as Complementary Currency . Local Currency is a form of the alternative currency. Examples are Calgary Dollars and Ithaca Hours .
