Alternate Route (teaching)

Alternative Certification is a secondary method of obtaining teacher certification.

Typically, regular certification requires the prospective teacher to take classes in psychology (relevant to the age group), lesson planning and instruction, use of textbooks, and classroom management. After these classes have been completed, the prospective teacher becomes a student teacher, being assigned to temporarily teach in the class of a Mentor teacher. After these successfully completing these placements, the prospective teacher is allowed to apply for certification, and set about obtaining a professional position.

In alternative certification, the prospective teacher seeks out a professional position before completing the certification program. Prior to obtaining, or something during, this job, the prospective teacher also takes the same classes as listed above. At the end of an entire year of teaching, the school district recommends the teacher for certification.

Alternative routes vary widely in quality. Quality alternative routes provide rich field experiences and serious pedagogical training before an aspiring teacher can apply for licensure.
