Alliance For Lupus Research

Since 2000, ALR has given more money to lupus research than any non-governmental agency in the world; as of 2006, over $35 million has been committed. Areas of research emphasis include: susceptibility, pathogenesis, inflammation and tissue damage, clinical assessment and therapy. The hallmarks of ALR’s program are an emphasis on multidisciplinary science and a keen focus on research that can be moved quickly from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside. One hundred percent of all donations from the public go directly to research due to the support of the Board of Directors, who underwrite all of ALR’s operating costs.

ALR uses a Peer Review system to make all funding decisions. Under its signature program, Target Identification in Lupus, ALR has awarded two-year grants of $500,000 to over 38 research projects at some of the finest laboratories and medical schools throughout the world. Eighteen months after awarding grants, ALR reviews each project, and those showing the most promise receive additional funding of up to $1 million.

ALR’s Scientific Advisory Board is chaired by Joseph Craft, M.D., of the Yale University School Of Medicine . This panel of distinguished research experts is responsible for recommending research policies to ALR’s Board of Directors and for reviewing the results of the peer review boards prior to making final funding recommendations to ALR’s Board of Directors. The Scientific Advisory Board is also responsible for conducting program analysis and for the development of the organization’s research strategic plan.

Through its fundraising, advocacy and research programs, ALR is creating new energy, excitement and hope among people who live with this debilitating disease.
