Information About

Alfonso Caso

Alfonso Caso y Andrade (Mexico City, 1896 - Mexico City, November 30 th, 1970) was one of big props of the so called "Mexican archaeology gold period". Between his discoveries are the prehispanic city of Monte Albán (which is now visited by lots of tourists and archaeologists), the famous Tomb Seven of Monte Alban (in which several gold pieces and magnific offerings were found -now it is shown in the Regional Museum of Oaxaca-), and lots of sites in the Mixteca (a region in the mexican state of Oaxaca , obviously where the Mixtecan people used to live), such as Yucuita , Yucuñidahui and Monte Negro . However, Caso was beyond the mere discoveries and was able to make an interpretation, finally stablishing the chronology of Monte Albán history, and deciphering Mixtec Codices . This is why Caso is considered a great archaeologist.
He did throughout his life great and important books about Zapotec culture, Mixtec culture and Aztec culture.
He belived that the systematic study of ancient mexican civilizations was an important way to understand mexican cultural roots.
