DETAILS He was 33 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 3rd Bn., Imperial Yeomanry during the South African War (Boer War) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 20 October 1900 near Zeerust , South Africa , Lieutenant Doxat, with a party of mounted infantry was reconnoitring a position held by 100 Boers on a ridge of kopjes. When the enemy opened a heavy fire on the reconnaissance party they had to retire, but Lieutenant Doxat, seeing that one of his men had lost his horse, galloped back under very heavy fire and took him on his own horse to a place of safety.
