The Captain of the Royal Navy was first a member of the Jackson-Harmsworth-Expedition. This expedition was started, to find out, if Franz-Josef-Land belongs to Antarctica. But they found Fridtjof Nansen and his men, saving them from sure death. He was then Robert Falcon Scott 's navigator and second-in-command on the Dicovery-Expedition to the Antarctica.
