Information About

Albert Angelo

PLOT

Albert Angelo tells the story of Albert Albert, a subsitute Teacher who longs to be an Architect . He has had to resort to teaching to make ends meet, as he is not an accomplished enough architect to make a living from it. Having recently moved to the Angel in London , he finds himself teaching in rougher schools than he is used to, and part of the story concerns his struggle with difficult pupils in class, mirroring Albert's struggle with life in general. We also learn some of the pupils' opinions of 'Alby', as they call their teacher, and their attitudes towards him.

Albert devotes much thought to his ex-girlfriend Jenny, with whom he is very much still in love. He reminisces about her frequently. In the story he pursues a number of women in an obvious attempt to 'move on' from Jenny, but with little success.

The story is at times humorous and at others incredibly serious. As is usual in a Johnson novel Sexuality is openly and frankly discussed. Johnson's writing technique allows us to see the development of Albert from many angles, and ultimately the story can deeply affect the reader.

STYLE

As mentioned, the book is written in an unorthodox style. This is typical of Johnson, though it is not uniform throughout his books. ''Albert Angelo'' is divided into several parts, ending with a Coda , normally used in Musical Score . Several of the pages have holes cut into them, allowing the reader to glimpse patches of text further ahead in the story. The book closes with a self-reflection by the author, explaining some of the reaons for writing it and what he was attempting to achieve, along with his own experiences which helped shape the story.
