Alan Harvey Bible ( November 20 , 1909 - September 12 , 1988 ) was a Nevada Politician of the Democratic Party who served as a United States Senator from 1954 until 1974 . Bible was born in Lovelock, Nevada , graduated from the University Of Nevada , Reno , and attended Law School at Georgetown University , where he graduated in 1934 . He was admitted to the Nevada Bar in 1935 ; in the same year, he began serving as District Attorney for Storey County, Nevada , where he worked until 1938 . In that year, he was appointed deputy Attorney General of Nevada, and served a four year term. After a spell of private practice, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1954 , to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Patrick A. McCarran for the term ending January 3 , 1957 . He was reelected in 1956 , 1962 , and again in 1968 and represented Nevada in the United States Senate from December 2 , 1954 , until his resignation on December 17 , 1974 . During his time in the United States Senate, he was chairman of the Committee On The District Of Columbia (Eighty-fifth through Ninetieth Congresses; see District Of Columbia ), the Joint Committee On Washington Metropolitan Problems (Eighty-fifth and Eighty-sixth Congresses), and the U.S. Senate Select Committee On Small Business (Ninety-first through Ninety-third Congresses).
