Akbar Allahabadi was a famous urdu poet who was born as Syed Akbar Hussain at Allahabad in 1846. Though initially educated only in madrasas (religious school), he later learnt law and finally retired as the session judge in Allahabad Court. He lived through tumultous times, witessing the first war of independence, first world war and even initial part of Gandhi's peaceful movement. He was perhaps the first to try sarcasm as a means of social critique in his ghazals. He was also known to use common english word in his poetry. Akbar Allahabadi was in his heart an orthodox muslim and was disturbedby the changes going on in the muslim society at that time. He vigorously opposed changes advocated by his liberal contemperory Sir Syed founder of Aligarh Muslim University . His most well known ghazal has been immortalized by Ghulam Ali.
