During the Second World War he operated under the code-name "Borowski," and ran CENTOS, a Jewish charitable organization that cared for the children of the Warsaw Ghetto . He helped Jews escape the Ghetto, and was responsible for making contacts with Poles, since he was able to move relatively freely as he did not look Jewish. After the Destruction Of The Warsaw Ghetto , he continued to work in the underground, saving the last manuscript prepared by ghetto historian Emanuel Ringelblum . Following the war, he was a founder of Berihah , the clandestine effort to smuggle Polish Jews to Palestine. In 1950, he emigrated to Israel himself. He testified in the Eichmann trial, and was a member of the Knesset , or Israeli parliament. He also wrote two books in Hebrew on his experiences. He was a member of the Communist Party of Israel. He was brother of Jakub Berman , a Communist politician in Poland. EXTERNAL LINKS
