Admiral Komack is a character of the '' Star Trek '' universe who holds the distinction of being the first Admiral to ever appear in a Star Trek production. Komack is first seen in the Star Trek Original Series episode " Amok Time (TOS Episode) ". In "Amok Time", Admiral Komack makes a single appearance via long range communications speaking to Captain James T. Kirk on a viewscreen. Komack appears to be wearing a gold command shirt but, as only the upper portion of his body is visible, his rank insignia as a Starfleet Admiral remains unseen. Admiral Komack’s name is mentioned at the end of the episode, when an order is transmitted to the Starship Enterprise advising Captain Kirk that permission is given to divert to the planet Vulcan . Admiral Komack was one of only four Admirals to appear in the entire Original Star Trek series. The next time a Starfleet Admiral was seen was during '''' in the person of Rear Admiral Kirk. Another Admiral from the Motion Picture, Fleet Admiral Nogura , is spoken of in the film but never seen on camera. Unofficial sources, including comments from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry , indicate that Admiral Komack's first name may have been "Barry" although this was never confirmed in the episode "Amok Time". Admiral Komack was played by actor Byron Morrow . Admiral Komack was named for James Komack, director of " A Piece Of The Action (TOS Episode) ". A prolific actor, writer and producer, Komack was the guiding force behind such television hits as The Courtship of Eddie's Father, in which he also appeared as Norman Tinker, Chico and the Man, and Welcome Back, Kotter. Komack is credited with discovering and launching the careers of John Travolta and the late Freddie Prinze. Early in his career, Komack worked as a stand up comedian and also appeared as a regular in the series Hennesey. At the time of his death, he was writing a book about Hollywood. EXTERNAL LINKS |
