HISTORY Adams county was identified by the state legislature in 1851 and named in honor of the second President Of The United States , John Adams , or his son, the sixth President, John Quincy Adams (sources differ). The county was finally organized and separated from Pottawattamie County on March 12 , 1853 . Its original size was later reduced by the creation of Montgomery and Union Counties. GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,102 Km&2 (425 Mi&2 ). 1,097 km&2 (424 mi&2) of it is land and 5 km&2 (2 mi&2) of it is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 4,482 people, 1,867 households, and 1,235 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 4/km&2 (11/mi&2). There were 2,109 housing units at an average density of 2/km&2 (5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.91% White , 0.07% Black or African American , 0.45% Native American , 0.18% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.04% from Other Races , and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,867 households out of which 28.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% were Married Couples living together, 5.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% were non-families. 30.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91. In the county the population was spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 24.10% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 21.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.70 males. The median income for a household in the county was $30,453, and the median income for a family was $40,030. Males had a median income of $26,510 versus $20,645 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $15,550. 9.30% of the population and 6.40% of families were below the Poverty Line . 11.40% of those under the age of 18 and 11.10% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
