In 1867, Ada married Henry B. Kepley, who had his own law practice in Effingham, Illinois . Ada first worked as her husband's legal assistant. Later, she embarked on a professional legal career of her own. She went to Chicago to study at the Union College of Law (1869-1870). When she earned her Bachelor of Law degree ( LL.B. ), in 1870, she was the first woman to graduate from law school in the United States. However, as a woman, she was denied a license to practice law and therefore never officially became a "lawyer." |
