Information About

Academic Assistant

There is an Academic Assistant on each floor in Fenner Hall, with the exception of a couple of librarians. Each Academic Assistant is responsible for a certain subject area. Their responsibilities include:
  • Making themselves available for 'drop-in' sessions for students who would like guidance in their studies

  • Being an active member of the college community

  • Running a 'special project' at some stage during the year. This can be anything that interests them and involves members of the college community.

  • Taking an active interest in first-year students who live on their floor, and

  • Generally setting an example as an office-bearer.

The Academic Assistant position is one which has a subtle but important influence on the atmosphere of Fenner Hall . The fact that it exists within the college community along side such organisations as the Junior Common Room , the Senior Common Room and other such social organisations shifts the focus from purely 'good times' to one of academic pursuit in conjunction with social themes.

Prior to 2006, Academic Assistants received an honorarium in the form of a 40% rebate on their rental allowance throughout the year. To better reflect market forces, encouraging efficiency and motivating AAs to promote their areas of study, from 2006 onward AAs will be paid an hourly rate of $15, monitored by the Sub-Deans. AAs will continue to reside in a bedroom and ajoining office.
