As of 2005 , the city has an estimated Population of 309,998. The total area is 205.16 km&2. It is a manufacturing center that produces banko ware (a kind of porcelain), automobiles, cotton textiles, chemicals, tea, cement, and computer parts such as DRAM. The city was founded on August 1 , 1897 . From 1960 to 1972 , the city suffered health problems caused by pollution of SOx being dumped into the atmosphere from oil chemical plants. In Japan, a disease called ''Yokkaichi zensoku'' (a type of Asthma ) is named after the city, and it is considered one of the four major diseases that come from industrial pollution. EXTERNAL LINKS
