Square Co., Ltd. 's Computer Role-playing Game '' Final Fantasy V '' features five Player Character s (only four at a time). MAIN PLAYABLE CHARACTERS Bartz Klauser
Bartz Klauser (バッツ・クラウザー), is the main playable character for Square-Enix's Final Fantasy V. He is a twenty-year-old wanderer with a fear of heights, and becomes entangled in the quest to protect the Crystals when he helps Princess Reina and Galuf escape a goblin-filled area on their way to the Wind Shrine. Bartz is connected to the element of Wind. Some fans have commented that Bartz's character is rather bland and gets little, if any, development within the story, aside from an eagerness to save the world and his impressive lineage. His name was Butz in the fan translation. Bartz was born in the small town of Rikks to Drogan Klauser, one of the Warriors of Dawn from the second world, and a local woman named Stella (her maiden name is unknown). Stella died when Bartz was three, leaving him to be raised by his father. Drogan died when Bartz was seventeen. His parting advice to his son was to wander the world. Three years later, Bartz is travelling in the Tycoon area when he rescues a young woman being attacked by goblins. She thanks him and tells him that she is looking for her father at the Wind Shrine. Not long afterwards, a meteor crashes and an amnesiatic old man emerges. He and Reina decide to travel to the Wind Shrine together, but Bartz decides to continue his wanderings. His chocobo stops him, however, and he goes back to help the pair fight off goblins again. It is at that point that Bartz decides that his father would have wanted him to find out what was happening to the Crystals, and joins Reina and Galuf. From there, Bartz travels with the party, which is later augmented by the pirate Faris. It seems unclear as to why he is the apparent leader (or at least the character present on the world map) of the group until he beats Kelga's Lupine Attack, something that his father, Drogan, had taught him. It is revealed to him then that his father was one of the Warriors of Dawn, though he had never told his son. Bartz, unlike most Final Fantasy heroes, does not have an "official" romantic interest, leading Shipper fans to speculation. Some believe that Reina, who displays traits of a typical Final Fantasy heroine (5'3", Amano art of the two embracing), is his love interest. However, when the party returns to Tycoon Castle and Faris is dressed as a princess, Bartz remarks on how beautiful she is, and Krile teases him for blushing. This has been taken by others to indicate that Bartz is in love with Faris. Unlike FFVI and VII, however, there does not seem to be division amongst the fanbase over whom he loves. Reina Charlotte Tycoon
Reina Charlotte Tycoon is the young princess of Tycoon, and begins the story as her father, King Alexander Tycoon, leaves to investigate the Wind Crystal. She follows him after he does not return and meets Bartz, starting the quest to save the Crystals. Reina displays many traits of a steryotypical video game Princess : she is beautiful, kind, intelligent, and she also has a self-sacrificial streak that puts her in danger several times during the game. She is connected to the element of Water. Her name was Lenna in the fan translation. Reina is the first character the player meets. She is on her way to the Wind Shrine after her father fails to return from it, but encounters some goblins from which Bartz rescues her. After thanking him, the pair meet an amnesia-stricken old man that is, apparently, from the recently-crashed meteor. He identifies himself as Galuf, and he and Reina continue to the Wind Shrine before being attacked by goblins and rescued again by Bartz. At that point, the three decide to travel together. When they are captured a group of pirates in their attempt to steal their ship, Reina narrowly avoids being kidnapped for ransom when the captain, Faris, recognizes her pendant and joins them. It is later revealed that Faris is actually Reina's long-lost sister, Princess Salsa. When they reach the Wind Shrine, Reina is shocked when her father seems to disappear and die. She has no time to mourn, however, when it is revealed that she is one of the four Warriors of Dawn, fated to protect the crystals. ]]During the game, Reina puts her life in danger twice to save a dragon. the first time, she traverses a field of poison to bring an ailing dragon a Hiryuu plant to cure it. The second time, she takes a bite out of a Hiryuu plant (which is toxic to humans) to encourage it to eat. Her affection for dragons is explained in a flashback. While Reina was a child, her mother fell ill, and the only cure would have been the tongue of a dragon. Desperate to see her mother cured, Reina seized a knife and rushed to the last remaining dragon to cut out its tongue, which would have killed it. Her father stopped her, but no other cure for Queen Tycoon's illness could be found in time, and she died. After that painful experience, Reina learned the value of self-sacrifice. After X-Death's defeat, Reina and her sister Faris return to Tycoon Castle. Despite her younger age, Reina becomes the Queen when Faris abandons the throne to rejoin her pirate crew. Faris Scherwiz
Faris Scherwiz is the captain of a pirate ship. She is revealed in the game to be Reina Charlotte Tycoon's sister, making her father King Alexander Highwind Tycoon of Tycoon Castle and herself the rightful Queen of Tycoon, a position she does not accept. Her real birth name was '''Sarisa''', or '''Salsa''' in the official localization. According to the game, she is the youngest known pirate captain. She is bold, assertive, and has a particular dislike for being excluded or left behind. Faris' first appearance of the game is in a cave where she and her group of pirates capture Bartz, Reina and Galuf attempting to steal their ship. When Faris, at the moment thought to be a man, finds out that Reina wears the same pendant as her, she decides to pursue the quest to the Wind Shrine with them, and reveals the secret to her ship's ability to move without wind: a water dragon named Hydra (or Syldra). When they finally make it to the top of the tower, Reina is shocked to find that her father is being controlled by X-Death . Then Wind crystal shatters, and her father vanishes. Faris is affected by the king's disappearance as well, indicating that she has already made the connection between herself and Reina. After leaving the Wind Shrine, the ship is attacked by a monster in a whirlpool. Hydra dives in to battle the creature to prevent the ship from being destroyed, and is swallowed up. Faris is extremely distressed by this and has to be held back by the party so that she does not dive in after him. The ship drifts and finally lands at an area called the Ship Graveyard. The party is forced to cross a room filled with water. Bartz and Galuf try to get Faris to change out of her her wet things and warm up by the fire, but she refuses and they struggle. At that point, Faris is revealed to be a woman in disguise. She did this because she had been found by pirates when she was very young. She was unable to pronounce her name properly ("Farfa" or "Farifa") and was dubbed "Faris" by the crew. Because women were not respected by pirates, she dressed as a boy in order to be accepted by them. She tells them that being female does not make her less important, and also to "get over it." At the Ruined City, they see King Tycoon and follows him. Faris addresses him as "Father" before the party is dropped into a dungeon, and she explains that she and Reina are sisters. In the Final Fantasy Anthology localization, Salsa has a pronounced pirate accent (a translation decision some fans were displeased with) and a distinct lack of manners. She hates being a princess and refuses to act like one. At the end of the game, she is shown in Tycoon Castle with Reina, but she changes back into her old pirate clothing and rejoins her crew. Galuf Halm Baldesion
Galuf Baldesion, known as '''Galuf Doe''' at the beginning, is the King of Bal and one of the four original Warriors of Dawn that sealed X-Death thirty years prior to the beginning of the game. He is the oldest character in the party and displays great courage, an indominable spirit, and a sense of determination to protect the Crystals at all costs. Galuf is first encountered near the meteor by Bartz and Reina. Initially, Galuf suffers from Amnesia , being unable to remember anything except for his first name. When Reina mentions that she is heading to the Wind Shrine, Galuf offers to go with her, despite not knowing why. He and Reina form a party with Bartz after being rescued from a goblin attack by him, and they continue on their journey. When the road is blocked by an earthquake, the party enters a network of caves and sees a pirate ship sailing in despite the lack of wind to push it. As they need to get to the Wind Shrine quickly, Galuf suggests stealing the ship. After they are captured, however, Galuf complains about the plan and then claims he doesn't remember when Bartz points out that it was his idea. Upon reaching the Wind Shrine, the party discovers that it has been overrun by monsters. The Crystal itself shatters and they receive the first set of Job Crystals. Later on near the Ship Graveyard, the party is attacked by a soul-stealing Siren who presents each character with the illusion of a loved one. Bartz, Faris, and Reina all succumb to the spell. However, Galuf does not remember the young woman in his illusion despite the fact that she addresses him as "Grandpa." He is not taken in and slaps the others to bring them back to consciousness so that they can defeat the Siren. After the Water Crystal in Walz shatters and gives the party their second set of Job Crystals, a warrior addresses Galuf as "Sir Galuf," but dies as Galuf asks him about his identity. When the Fire Crystal in Karnak is destroyed, a character called "Lone Wolf" also recognizes Galuf, but he too dies. It is when Mid beats his grandfather Cid around the head to stop moping that Galuf remembers his granddaughter Krile doing the same thing. With that, he recovers his memory. Krile Maia Baldesion
Krile Maia Baldeson is Galuf's granddaughter. She has the unique ability to speak with Moogles , Dragons , Chocobos , and other animals. She is the youngest party member. Krile is an energetic and determined girl, and this as well as her ability to make light of a serious situation makes her one of the first "perky young girl" characters in Final Fantasy (Setting the footprints for Yuffie, Selphie, and Rikku). Much of Krile's past is unknown, but it is theorized that her parents died while in search of a dragon in the desert. Like Galuf, Krile comes from the second world. Before Galuf's death, Krile will aid the party by holding off a possessed King Tycoon, giving them a ride on her dragon, and giving Reina an elixer after she is poisoned by a Hiryuu Plant. However, she does not become a playable character until after Galuf sacrifices himself in the fight against X-Death. She becomes a member of the party immediately afterwards and inherits all of Galuf's job crystals and skills. There is no time for her to mourn her loss, as the party is rushing to try and stop X-Death from summoning the Void. After the party is mysterioiusly sent to Castle Tycoon, Krile talks to Bartz while Faris and Reina are on ceremony. She is sad over her grandfather's death, but she also says that she thinks he is telling her to hurry. She and Bartz leave to find X-Death and are soon joined by Faris. Krile receives a splinter that transforms into X-Death after Sage Guido's explanation of the Crystals. He destroys Castle Tycoon by using the Void. She displays her grandfather's determination and drive to defeat X-Death At the end of the game, it is indicated that Krile claims the vacated throne of Bal as Galuf's granddaughter. She narrates the ending of the game through a letter to Mid and reminisces about Galuf, the Crystals, and their adventures as she is joined by the other surviving party members. ORIGINAL WARRIORS OF DAWN Drogan Klauser Drogan Klauser (Dorgan in the fan translation) protested against sealing X-Death on the first world, believing it unfair to its inhabitants. However, he and the other warriors could not find any other alternative. As a result, Dorgan made the decision to remain on that world, knowing that he would not be able to return on his own. After some years there, he married a woman named Stella and had a son, Bartz Klauser. His wife died three years afterwards, and Dorgan himself died when Bartz was seventeen. Kelga Vlondett Kelga Vlondett (Kelgar in the fan translation) was the leader of the town of Kelb, whose population consisted of werewolves. He returned to his homeworld after sealing X-Death. After the Wind Crystal shatters, he sends a werewolf comes to help after the battle with the possessed Queen Karnak. The werewolf will speak to the party and attempt to keep the Fire Crystal from shattering long enough for them to flee. Kelga himself appears later, challenging Bartz to a battle, in which the result is Bartz learning the truth about his father. Finally, while the party is in X-Death's Castle, he helps the party one last time, and then dies. Zezae Matias Surgate Zezae Matias Surgate (Zeza in the fan translation), sometimes called "Zezae of Ice" for his cool reasoning, was another of the original Warriors of Dawn. He was known for both his talent in swordsmanship and magic. Zezae leads the fleet of ships during the second assault on X-Death's castle and meets the party there. The ship is attacked by Gilgamesh, who is defeated. Zezae leads the party to one of the real attack ships: a submarine. They enter the secret tunnel under one of the Barrier Towers, and Zezae sends Galuf and the others to destroy it. While they are in there, Zezae is attacked, and the equipment in the reactor room of the tower is damaged. Zezae is trapped, but tells the party to go back to the submarine, even though he knew that he would not be able to escape. Zezae perishes in the fire. OTHER MAJOR CHARACTERS Cid Previa Cid Previa was an engineer working for the kingdom of Karnak, who designed the machinery used to extract power from the Fire Crystal. However, he eventually found that it was damaging the Fire Crystal, and tried to warn the Queen. Unfortunately, the Queen, who was under the influence of X-Death, put him in the prison, where he meets the party and helps them to escape. He assists the party afterwards several times, such as giving them the Steamship he invented, making a path through a desert, fixing an ancient airship, and opening a portal to the Second World. Mid Previa Mid Previa is the grandson of Cid. Like his grandfather, he is a genius with mechanics. He admires Cid for never giving up and tells him that when Cid is moping about his Crystal amplifying machines. After that, he travels along with his grandfather to assist the party. His father died in an accident three years before the events of the game. Alexander Highwind Tycoon Alexander Highwind Tycoon is the King of Tycoon and Reina's father. At the beginning of the game, he leaves Tycoon Castle on a dragon to investigate an anomaly with the Wind Crystal. He disappears, causing Reina to go and look for him and start the adventure. After his initial disappearance, King Tycoon appears several times throughout the game. He is first forced to fight the party when he is possessed by X-Death, his image is used by the Siren to lure Reina and Faris, and he finally appears in Gorn Castle to shatter the Earth Crystal. Krile arrives from the Second World and knocks him out after he does this, breaking X-Death's control. He awakens as the Crystal Shards are attacking the party, and protects them. However, he is mortally wounded by the shards and dies shortly therafter. Gill Gill (Guido in the fan translation) is a great sage residing in the Second World, who also happens to be a turtle. Hundreds of years old, he is very knowledgable about many events and items, and it is he who assists the party in acquiring and reading the Book of Seals. He appears to be quite skilled in battle, being able to fight against X-Death. Unfortunately, he, along with most of the Scholars in the Ancient Library, are eventually pulled into the Void. Boco Boco is the name of Bartz's Chocobo . Boco seems to be intelligent and good-natured. He nearly bucks Bartz off to motivate him to go back and help Reina and Galuf when they are attacked by goblins. Boco is left to his own devices when Bartz decides to travel with Reina and Galuf. He meets up with Bartz later in the game, now with a wife named Coco. Coco Coco is Boco's wife. She appears at a later point in the game, and is said to be pregnant with Boco's child. Though she does not have much significance in the story itself, her presence does suggest that chocobos mate for life, as she and Boco are "married." MAJOR VILLAINS Gilgamesh See Also: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy) Gilgamesh is one of X-Death's generals, and a recurring boss in the storyline. Halycanos Halicarnassus, or '''Halycanos''', is one of the game's primary antagonists. A flamboyant master of illusions, Halicarnassus is a servant of Exdeath and one of the demons residing in the Cleft of Dimensions. He is the king of the Castle of Illusions, and highly regarded in the cleft by the other demons. Once Bartz and his friends entered the cleft of dimensions, he came to a beautiful woman, who was really Halicarnassus in disguise. After defeating the monster, Catastrophe, Halicarnassus gave Bartz a kiss and scurried off. Later, as Bartz attempted to escape the castle, the woman appeared and Halicarnassus showed his true form, telling Bartz that he had taken his "kiss of death." After some flirting, Halicarnassus attacks, and his laugh attack turns Bartz and his friends into frogs (though if the player turns their party into frogs before the battle, Halicarnassus' laugh will turn the players back to normal). After a valiant effort, Butz destroys Halicarnassus and moves on through the cleft. X-Death X-Death (or '''Ex-Death''', '''Exdeath''') is a fictional Wizard , ruler of a parallel world, and the major antagonist in ''Final Fantasy V''. X-Death closely resembles the Viera Totema "Exodus" from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. It is possible that "Exodus" is X-Death's intended name, lost in translation from the original Japanese. X-Death is a powerful black mage. He was originally a tree sealed with numerous evil spirits. For years, the evil spirits resided inside that tree and eventually combined to form X-Death's current body. After being defeated by the four Dawn Warriors (Galuf, Zeza, Dorgan, and Kelgar), he was imprisoned within the first world, sealed by the power of the crystals, some 30 years before the events in the game. At this time, he shatters the four crytals one by one, just before the heroes are able to save it. After the fourth crystal is destroyed, X-Death is released and returns to the world of his origin and where Galuf comes from. Here, he returns to his castle. Bartz , Reina, and Faris are captured shortly after warping to his world. They are used as hostages to keep Galuf and his army from attacking. It is protected by a powerful barrier that is generated by four towers surrounding the castle. To attack the castle and defeat X-Death, the heroes must destroy one of the towers to disable the barrier. He is later revealed to be an actual tree. In X-Death's world, the four crystals are contained in the Elder Tree in Moore Forest. X-Death destroys these crystals, because they are holding the two worlds apart, as they were once a single world, but were separated. He kills Galuf, who tries to defend the crystals and his friends. By doing so, the two worlds recombine, and X-Death gains access to the power that is the void between them, the Mu (The Void in the fan translation). He utilizes this power to great destruction, effectively annihilating Tycoon Castle, Bartz's hometown, and other locations. EXTERNAL LINKS
