The district is named after the River Wyre , which runs through the district. It was formed on April 1 , 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972 , and was a merger of the Municipal Borough of Fleetwood, along with Poulton-le-Fylde, Preesall and Thornton-Cleveleys Urban District s and Garstang Rural District .
Wyre is currently divided into three Parliamentary Constituencies - Lancaster And Wyre , Blackpool North And Fleetwood and Fylde . Following forthcoming boundary changes, Wyre will be split into just two - Wyre And Preston North and Lancaster And Fleetwood .
