Wynton Rufer gained prommence in 1982 when he was part of the New Zealand national team which
competed in the finals of the World Cup in Spain . Following his exposure on the international
stage he signed to play in Europe and he subsequently became the first New Zealand player to play successfully in Europe.

Wynton Rufer was voted as the Oceania Footballer of the Century ahead of Frank Farina
(Australia) and Christian Karembeu (New Caledonia/France). He also won the Oceania Footballer Of The Year title three times (1989, 1990 and 1992) & footballer of the decade (1990's). He is currently a member of the Fifa Players committee & is involved officially in the Fifa Oceania confederation.

He ended his career with the Football Kingz , who performed poorly in the National Soccer League (Australia) . Rufer, although well past his prime, was the only bright light in the club.

Wynton Rufer founded the Wynrs football academy for young players. The academy is based in Auckland, New Zealand and the academy has had several promising players graduate through the academy.
