Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution




In the early-to-mid 1980s, WHOI's Dr. Robert Ballard , and WHOI itself, received much publicity because of his (ultimately successful) search for the remains of the ''Titanic'' on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean .


HISTORY

WHOI was founded in 1930 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation . Henry Bryant Bigelow was its first director.


VESSELS

WHOI operates several research vessels and vehicles, owned by the United States Navy or the National Science Foundation : {Link without Title}

WHOI also shares with MBL a large library of marine-related works .

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has a counterpart on the west coast, the Scripps Institution Of Oceanography .
