Wolfgang Thierse is a German politician. He was born on October 22 , 1943 in Breslau . He is a Roman Catholic , grew up in East Germany and studied German at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin. Later, he worked for the east-german ministry for cultural affairs. In 1989 , he joined the opposition movement Neues Forum and in 1990 the SPD . He was elected deputy chairman and subsequently became a member of the Bundestag . After the SPD 's victory in the 1998 general elections, he was elected as President of the German Bundestag and served for two terms until October 2005 , when he was succeeded by Norbert Lammert . Thierse was elected vice president of the Bundestag. |
