Edmund de la Pole, fell out with and was imprisoned by Henry VII. He was then beheaded on the orders of Henry VIII with no trial who confiscated the Castle and the Pole estates for himself.
Later on the Wingfield’s, which were direct decedents of Edmund de la pole, took the castle back by secretly marrying into it and than after Henry IX and his son Henry X were perished from old age Sir John took the castle back and when he died he signed it over to the direct family line.To the north of the modern day college is the great 14th century church. Here visitors can see tomb-monuments of Sir John de Wingfield and the de la Pole family.
