Windows Live Messenger (WLM) is a Beta Version of the next generation of MSN Messenger , part of Microsoft 's new online service called Windows Live . Windows Live Messenger will reportedly introduce numerous new features and include all of the features from MSN Messenger. Though Windows Live Messenger can be openly downloaded, you must be signed up as a beta tester to use the product. NEW FEATURES Sharing folders The ''Sharing Folder'' feature of Windows Live Messenger is an alternative to the current " Direct Transfer " method of file distribution. When a user wants to deliver a file to another person on his or her Contact List , the "sharing folder" window appears, which is an individualized representation of all previously shared items. When files are added to the "sharing folder" for that particular person, the file will automatically be transferred to the corresponding computer when they are online. This means that the folder is literally "shared" between two computers. If a user deletes a file, for example, the file will also be deleted from the corresponding computer's shared folder. To minimize risk of virus-infected transfers, the "sharing folder" feature is bundled with an Anti-virus program. The "sharing folder" feature can only be used on computers with NTFS formatted Hard Disks . Communicating while appearing offline With this new feature, one's status may be set to appear offline, however, unlike previous versions of MSN Messenger, one can continue to communicate while appearing offline. Selecting the color scheme Windows Live Messenger allows one to set the entire color scheme, an upgrade from only being able to choose the chat windows' color scheme in previous versions of MSN Messenger. A paint bucket menu is situated below the personal message box in Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0566. Adding/Customizing of nickname Previously attainable via Messenger Plus! , the adding/customizing of nicknames function is available for Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0566, albeit without formatting options. Right clicking on the contact and clicking 'Add a Nickname' will allow their name to be changed in your contact list. DISTRIBUTION Windows Live Messenger can be obtained from Microsoft for free at their Live Ideas website. But, the user needed an invitation, either from Microsoft or some other beta tester, to log in to the service. This restriction has now been removed and anyone can download and sign in through Windows Live Messenger. GALLERY |
