Winchester Inc.( U.S. Repeating Arms ) describes the WSSM cartridge line as an evolution of the high performance Winchester Short Magnum concept into the realm of smaller, high velocity bullets. They introduced the 223 and 243 Winchester Super Short Magnums (WSSM)in early 2003. Winchester, in partnership with Browning Arms Company and Winchester ammunition, designed the WSSM in 223 and 243 WSSM calibers. There are basic advantages inherent to the Short Magnum concept: improved accuracy due to the uniform load density and consistent burn of a short, fat powder column and moderate recoil due to more efficient propellants. Considering the .25 WSSM, its case has 11% less displacement than the .25-06 with 14% less powder. The .25-06 requires a .30-06 length action. But the .25 WSSM shoots a 115 grain (7.5 g) bullet at around 3,000 ft/s (910 m/s) from a cartridge that is almost a full inch shorter that the .25-06. This means that a WSSM rifle will be shorter by two full action sizes, from standard to short to super-short length. The intrinsic accuracy benefits of a short, stiffer action over a long action are well-established principles of rifle design. The resulting rifle is smaller, lighter, more compact, and quicker handling, with essentially nondiscernible recoil effect. |
